Baltzar von Platen begann 1810 mit dem Bau des G\u00f6ta-Kanals, und 1832 war der gesamte Kanal fertiggestellt. Der G\u00f6ta-Kanal ist mit Abstand eines der gr\u00f6\u00dften Bauprojekte, die jemals in Schweden durchgef\u00fchrt wurden. Der Kanal erstreckt sich von Sj\u00f6torp am V\u00e4nern bis Mem am Sl\u00e4tbaken, ist 190 km lang und hat 58 Schleusen. Von dieser Strecke sind 87 km als Kanal gegraben.<\/p>\n

Schon im 16. Jahrhundert schlug der bekannte Bischof Brask in Link\u00f6ping vor, dass eine schiffbare Verbindung quer durch Schweden gebaut werden sollte \u2013 von der Ostsee zum westlichen Meer.
Die Pl\u00e4ne f\u00fcr einen Kanal durch Schweden sollten in der Folgezeit noch viel hin und her diskutiert werden, bis dann Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts die Kanalpl\u00e4ne Baltzar von Platens verwirklicht wurden. <\/p>\n
