Ein 300 Jahre alter Traum<\/h2>\n

Er nahm die Hilfe von Europas f\u00fchrendem Kanalbauer, dem Schotten Thomas Telford, in Anspruch. Am 11. April 1810 erlie\u00df Karl XIII. einen Privilegienbrief, in dem er der G\u00f6ta-Kanalgesellschaft das Recht zum Bau und Betrieb des Kanals erteilte und ihr Arbeitskr\u00e4fte, Land und W\u00e4lder f\u00fcr den Bau zuwies. Im Mai 1810 erfolgte der erste Spatenstich in Motala. Jedes Mal, wenn ich mir die schwedische Karte ansah, wunderte ich mich dar\u00fcber, dass es keinen Kanal gab, der das \u00f6stliche und das westliche Meer miteinander verband. Ein Kanal w\u00fcrde sowohl den Handel erleichtern als auch gut f\u00fcr die schwedische Verteidigung sein. Bereits 1808 war der britische Ingenieur Thomas Telford in Schweden und half mir, die Route des G\u00f6ta-Kanals zu kartieren. Daf\u00fcr brauchten wir 21 Tage. Aber erst als ich 1810 das Privilegienschreiben des K\u00f6nigs erhielt, konnte ich ernsthaft mit dem Bau beginnen. <\/p>\n

Wir begannen mit den Ausgrabungen in Forsvik, wo sich noch heute die \u00e4lteste Schleuse des Kanals befindet. Viele Arbeiter waren an dem Bau beteiligt und 1812 waren siebentausend M\u00e4nner damit besch\u00e4ftigt, zu graben, zu sprengen und Erde abzutragen. Am Ende hatten die M\u00e4nner 87,3 Kilometer Kanal gegraben, gr\u00f6\u00dftenteils von Hand mit eisenbeschlagenen Holzschaufeln. Au\u00dferdem hatten sie 12 Millionen Arbeitstage absolviert, 200 000 Kubikmeter Gestein weggesprengt und 8 Millionen Kubikmeter Erde abtransportiert. <\/p>\n

Die meisten meiner Arbeiter waren wehrpflichtige Soldaten; 58.000 wurden zu verschiedenen Zeiten auf die Baustelle einberufen. Aber neben den Soldaten arbeiteten auch Zivilisten und eine kleine Gruppe von 200 russischen Deserteuren. Um die M\u00e4nner bei Laune zu halten, geh\u00f6rte zu ihrer w\u00f6chentlichen Ration \u00fcber ein Liter Branntwein. Wenn es kalt war, konnten beide Finger und F\u00fc\u00dfe in der K\u00e4lte taub werden. <\/p>\n

Wir importierten sowohl einen Bagger als auch eine Waage aus Gro\u00dfbritannien, aber das Wissen, das die Briten mit uns teilten, war absolut unbezahlbar. Sie halfen bei der Gr\u00fcndung von Motala Verkstad, einer Werkstatt, die auf unsere Bed\u00fcrfnisse eingehen sollte. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde die Werkstatt f\u00fcr ihre Gusseisentechnologie bekannt und mehrere ber\u00fchmte schwedische Ingenieure wurden hier ausgebildet. Nils und John Ericsson, Gottfried Kockum und C. G. Bolinder haben alle in Motala Verkstad den Boden betreten. Das Gef\u00fchl, als wir 1822 den Abschnitt West-G\u00f6taland einweihen konnten, war unbeschreiblich. Ich wurde von Seiner Majest\u00e4t Carl XIV. Johan mit dem Seraphim-Orden geehrt. Leider konnte ich nicht dabei sein, als zehn Jahre sp\u00e4ter die Sektion in \u00d6sterg\u00f6tland eingeweiht wurde. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war ich bereits seit drei Jahren tot. Aber mein Kanal lebt weiter, ebenso wie mein Motto: „Man kann alles tun, was man will, und wenn man sagt, dass man es nicht kann, will man es nicht.“ Im Jahr 2000 wurde der G\u00f6ta-Kanal von der Zeitschrift Byggindustri zum schwedischen Bauwerk des Jahrtausends gew\u00e4hlt. Die W\u00e4hler waren das schwedische Volk. Motala Werkstatt<\/h4>\n

1822 gr\u00fcndete Baltzar von Platen eine kleine mechanische Werkstatt in Motala, die sich sp\u00e4ter zur „Wiege der schwedischen Maschinenbauindustrie“ entwickeln sollte.<\/p>\n

Die feierliche Einweihung<\/h4>\n

Am 26. September 1832 wurde der G\u00f6ta-Kanal in Mem in Anwesenheit des schwedischen K\u00f6nigs Karl XIV Johan und seiner Familie mit gro\u00dfem Pomp eingeweiht. Baltzar von Platen erlebte die Kr\u00f6nung seines Lebenswerkes nicht mehr. Er starb knapp drei Jahre zuvor, im Jahr 1829. <\/p>\n

Kommerzieller Verkehr<\/h4>\n

W\u00e4hrend des gesamten 19. Jahrhunderts war der Kanal als Transportweg von gro\u00dfer Bedeutung, sowohl f\u00fcr Waren als auch f\u00fcr Passagiere. Allerdings hatte der Kanal nicht die langfristige Bedeutung, die sich von Platen erhofft hatte. Die Eisenbahn und vor allem der Lastwagenverkehr \u00fcbernahmen schlie\u00dflich die Rolle des Kanals. Stattdessen wurde der Transportweg zu einer der beliebtesten und bekanntesten Touristenattraktionen Schwedens. <\/p>\n
