The G\u00f6ta Canal \u2013 one of Sweden\u2019s greatest attractions<\/h2>\n

You could say that the idea for the canal was born out of frustration: one of the main motivations was to avoid the high customs duties imposed by Denmark. Baltzar von Platen began construction of the G\u00f6ta Canal in 1810, and the entire canal was completed in 1832.<\/p>\n

The G\u00f6ta Canal is undoubtedly one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in Sweden. It stretches 190 km from Sj\u00f6torp on Lake V\u00e4nern to Mem on Sl\u00e4tbaken and has 58 locks. Of this distance, 87 km is excavated canal.<\/p>\n
