Baltzar von Platen began building the G\u00f6ta Canal in 1810, and by 1832 the entire canal was completed. The G\u00f6ta Canal is by far one of the largest construction projects ever carried out in Sweden. The canal stretches from Sj\u00f6torp on Lake V\u00e4nern to Mem at Sl\u00e4tbaken, is 190 km long, and has 58 locks. Of that distance, 87 km is dug canal.<\/p>\n

History of the G\u00f6ta Canal<\/h3>\n

The G\u00f6ta Canal was one of the largest civil engineering projects ever undertaken in Sweden. The Canal stretches from Sj\u00f6torp on Lake V\u00e4nern to Mem on the east coast. It has a length of 190 kilometres and a total of 58 locks. Of this distance, 87 kilometres are man-made. The lakes through which the Canal passes make up 103 kilometres of its length. <\/p>\n

A dream dating back 300 years<\/h4>\n

As early as the sixteenth century, the renowned Bishop Brask in Link\u00f6ping proposed a Canal across Sweden from the Baltic to the North Sea. Plans for such a waterway came to be discussed many times before Baltzar von Platen finally transformed them into reality. <\/p>\n
