A perfect blend of Göta Canal’s famous locks and Kinda Canal’s peaceful nature

Saturday (Day 1) – Arrival & Orientation

12:00-14:00 – Welcome to Motala Verkstad

• Check-in at Svarta Gatan 1 – Your adventure begins at the historic heart of Göta Canal
• Boat briefing & safety orientation – Get familiar with your floating home
• Evening exploration:
• Visit Motala Verkstad Museum (just 20m away) – Discover where the canal’s lock gates were forged
• Stock up at supermarkets (600m walk) for your week ahead
• Enjoy dinner at harbor restaurants and soak in the canal atmosphere

Tip: Take time tonight to study your route and get comfortable with the boat controls

Sunday (Day 2) – The Grand Lock Adventure

9:00-15:00 – Motala to Berg (14 locks, 35 km, crossing Lake Boren)

Morning Highlights:

• 9:00 – Depart through Motala’s locks into the Swedish countryside
• 10:30 – Borenshult Lock Staircase – Experience 5 consecutive locks, one of Sweden’s most impressive engineering feats
• 12:00 – Lake Boren Crossing (1.5 hours) – Relax and enjoy Sweden’s pristine lake scenery

Afternoon:

• 13:30 – Pass through Ljungsbro Aqueduct – A unique canal bridge experience
• 15:00 – Arrive at Berg Basin Marina – Moor before the final locks to Lake Roxen

Evening at Berg:

• Must-see: Berg’s famous 7-lock system (view from above)
• Cultural gem: 15-minute walk to Vreta Kloster Ruins – Sweden’s first monastery and 12th-century church
• Dinner options available in Berg village

Monday (Day 3) – Into Kinda Canal

9:00-14:00 – Berg to Tannefors (Lock at Nykvarn ~11:30)

Morning prep: Empty septic tank and refill water at Berg facilities

Journey highlights:

• Enter the peaceful Kinda Canal system
• 11:30 – Navigate Nykvarn lock
• Experience the contrast between Göta Canal’s grandeur and Kinda’s intimate nature
• Arrive Tannefors or the harbor by the canal office – Gateway to Linköping region

Tuesday (Day 4) – Remote Canal Beauty

9:00-15:00 – Tannefors to Hovetorp

• Enjoy Kinda Canal’s most secluded stretch
• Hovetorp – Remote harbor perfect for stargazing and tranquility
• Note: No restaurants/shops – ensure you’re well-stocked from previous stops
• Perfect day for onboard dining and nature appreciation

Wednesday (Day 5) – City Exploration

9:00-15:00 – Hovetorp to Linköping/Tannefors

Choose your adventure:

• Option A: Moor at Linköping Canal Office – Explore Sweden’s aviation city
• Option B: Return to Tannefors for a quieter evening

Linköping highlights:

• Historic city center
• Shopping and dining opportunities
• Cultural attractions and museums

Thursday (Day 6) – Return Journey Begins

9:00-15:00 – Linköping to Malfors (Berg lock ~12:00)

Morning: Depart Linköping area Midday: Berg lock passage (~12:00) – Empty septic tank and refill water Afternoon: Arrive Malfors

Priority mooring for electric boats due to limited shore power

Friday (Day 7) – Final Lake Crossing

9:00-14:00 – Malfors to Motala

Critical stop: Borensberg – Empty septic tank before Lake Boren (last opportunity – €150 fee if missed!) Lake Boren crossing – Your final scenic lake journey Arrival: Motala Gamla Verkstad – Full circle back to where you started

Evening: Celebrate your canal adventure in Motala’s restaurants

Saturday (Day 8) – Farewell

9:00 – Check-out

To make your trip as smooth as possible, lock passages are scheduled at fixed times. This is because, in cooperation with the Göta Canal Company, we arrange lock keepers at specific times to assist our rental boats through the locks. This way you avoid getting stuck in queues and can feel confident you’ll reach the correct final harbour according to the route plan.

Saturday (Day 1) — 12:00–14:00 — Motala Check-in

• Arrival and boat introduction at Motala Verkstad Harbour

• Motala Verkstad Museum (20 m from the harbour)

• Evening free to explore Motala and get comfortable with the boat

Sunday (Day 2) — 08:40–15:00 — Motala to Berg

Overnight harbour: Basin Marina in Berg (before the final locks to Lake Roxen)

• First major lock experience
• 09:00: Borenshult lock staircase (5 locks)
• Cross Lake Boren (approx. 1.5 hours)
• Key attractions:
• The impressive Borenshult lock staircase
• Beautiful views on Lake Boren
• Göta Hotell in Borensberg (built 1908)
• The aqueduct in Ljungsbro
• Berg’s famous lock system (one of the canal’s highlights)
• 15-minute walk to the ruins of Sweden’s first monastery: Vreta Kloster and the 12th-century church

Monday (Day 3) — 09:00–15:00 — Berg to Norsholm

8 locks • 27 km • 1 lake

• Before departure: empty the septic tank (toilet) and refill frech water
• Complete the remaining 7 locks of Berg’s lock staircase
• Cross Lake Roxen (approx. 3 hours). Please make sure you have enough time to reach the final harbour in Norsholm — confirm timing with your lock keeper.
• 1 lock in Norsholm
• Points of interest:
• Scenic views on Lake Roxen
• Historic Norsholm lock keeper’s house
• Railway bridge crossing
• Restaurant Kapten Bille’s (5 m from the harbour)

Tuesday (Day 4) — 09:00–14:00 — Norsholm to Söderköping

12 locks • 22 km • 1 lake

• Delphia boats (petrol): When you arrive in Söderköping, refuel using the petrol bottles onboard. Final refuelling of both the boat and bottles is done in Motala at the start harbour (you will receive instructions on where to refuel).
• Navigate through Lake Asplången
• Several single locks
• Arrive in charming Söderköping
• Highlights:
• The traditional ice cream restaurant in Söderköping
• Medieval town centre
• Local restaurants and shops
• Historic guest harbour

Wednesday (Day 5) — 09:00–15:00 — Söderköping to Norsholm

• Before departure: empty the septic tank (toilet) and refill fresh water
• Diesel boats (Regina, Albin 25): refuel in Norsholm
• Important: There is no petrol (Bensin) available in Norsholm — diesel only.
• Incorrect fuelling fee: If diesel is put into a petrol boat, the fee is €10,000.
• Return journey begins
• Same route with a different perspective
• Time for stops you missed on the way down

Thursday (Day 6) — 09:00–15:00 — Norsholm to Malfors

• Cross Lake Roxen
• Navigate the Berg locks
• Points of interest:
• A different perspective of Berg’s lock system
• Evening in peaceful Malfors — Malfors Café & Restaurant (5 m from the harbour)
• Visit the famous chocolate factory Cloetta (15-minute walk)

Friday (Day 7) — 09:00–14:00 — Malfors to Motala

• Final part through the Borenshult locks
• Return to Motala
• Time to explore any missed attractions in Motala

IMPORTANT (toilet emptying):
Please empty the toilet in Borensberg before crossing Lake Boren — this is the last opportunity.
If you miss this, there will be an extra fee of €200, because we must make an additional trip/lockage to Motala to empty the septic tank, this will take approx.. 3 hours extra.

Saturday (Day 8) — 09:00 — Check-out in Motala

• Return the boat
• Final checks and departure

Important Notes

• Start times are fixed and must be followed. End times are approximate and allow for breaks. Please keep in contact with your lock keeper.
• Shoulder season (pre- and post-season): Timings are especially important, as lock keepers may be scheduled to operate only for Göta Canal guests on a so-called VIP route. Please follow the stated start times and keep close contact with your lock keeper to ensure the locks are opened for you as planned.
• Electric boats have designated charging spots each night.
• All harbour facilities include toilets, showers, and shore power.
• Canal fees and harbour costs are included in your Canal Ticket.
• Grocery stores are available at major stops.
• Accidents can happen, even if they seem minor. Please contact Pontus as soon as possible so we can prepare repairs before the next guests arrive.
